Choose Your Christmas Theme
Christmas Planning
Ever feel like Christmas threw up in your house? You had all the right ingredients, but somehow they didn’t combine in the way you hoped. This week’s focus should help you resolve this disconnect. To state the obvious, the first step to creating the Christmas you’d like to have is to identify what that looks like. Simple, right?
It really is. All it takes is a little imagination. Let’s see…
What would make Christmas perfect for you? How about going on a sleigh ride, trimming the tree with Victorian fans, and serenading your neighbors with Christmas carols? Or maybe you picture your house dripping with Christmas lights, the path to your front door as Candy Cane Lane, and your tree hung with gingerbread men. Then again, you might prefer celebrating by the light of a medieval candelabra with evergreen boughs bedecking the mantle and an intimate gathering around the fire.
These very different versions of Christmas enhance certain moods and create a soothing feeling of cohesion. Choose your Christmas theme based on the mood you want to set. What would best suit you and your family?
Ask your family members what Christmas activities they want to do and see if you can identify a theme you would all enjoy from them. You may have to compromise with one another or designate areas of the house for different decorations. For example, you could create Santa’s Toy Shop in the family room to please the kids while the living room becomes the Country Christmas you envision. Combining themes can produce interesting results. Who wouldn’t want to visit Santa’s Country Toy Shop?
Planning around a Christmas theme makes selecting activities, foods, and decorations easier, saving you time and mental energy. If you choose a Winter Wonderland Christmas theme, there’s no need to pull out those jewel-colored lights when white, silver, and blue ones convey the right atmosphere. And if you’ll indulge in a Dickens’ Christmas Carol Christmas, you’ll probably want to skip turkey in favor of roast goose for Christmas dinner.
Besides these benefits, planning your Christmas around a theme is just plain fun!
It’s never too early to look forward to Christmas. Put on some holiday music and sip homemade pumpkin spice lattes or steamers while you and your family discuss Christmas activities and themes. Don’t forget to jot down the ideas that come and save your notes for next week, when we’ll assemble our Christmas binders.

Prepare for Christmas
Hang outdoor Christmas lights this week while the weather is still warm and you can do it without aching fingers. Depending on the lights you use, you may be able to turn them on for other holidays. Or, if you’d rather not hang lights just yet, you can always install hangers now to make it easier on yourself later.
