“Place your unpaid bills before you, then apply the seat of your pants to the seat of the chair-and write.” This sage advice from Mary Heaton Vorse to Wilbur Daniel Steele , her husband’s distant cousin, and to Sinclair Louis, Steele’s roommate may have had something to do with their later success. Steele became an honored master of the short-story form and Sinclair Louis became the first American author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
I’m taking Mary Heaton Vorse’s advice to heart this month and spending long hours at my desk. It’s crunch time for me with a deadline looming, another manuscript I’d dearly like to complete, and a book that just released. I’ve learned something though from dealing with time stress in the past. Getting emotional will only cripple me. This time, I’m hanging onto my cool. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that I’m accomplishing more.
