Lost in Time: Edward & Eleanor: A Royal Love Story that Transcended Death

Queen EleanorEdward, King of England

I fell in love with Welsh Castles while researching my debut novel, DawnSinger, book one of Tales of Faeraven. A novel written in the epic fantasy genre would not seem to require much research, but I base its world on 13th-Century Europe.

The inspiration for one of my fictional locations was Castle Conway (Conway), which guards the mouth of the River Gyffin.  My first virtual glimpse of this monolithe stunned me. In the picture it didn’t look real, towering above miniscule cars parked beside it.  I pored over images and tourist videos alike, utterly smitten.  Here’s the picture that hooked me:

King Edward I of England had the castle built between 1283-87 by James of St. George. Its masterful design makes the construction of Castle Conwy one of the highest achievements of medieval military architecture. It, and a string of castles were erected to subdue the Welsh in a brutal era.

Contrasted against the cruelty of the age in which they lived, the love story of King Edward I and his child bride, Eleanor of Castile, blossomed like a tender rose among thorns. Theirs was a marriage of political convenience, made when Edward was 15 and Eleanor somewhere between 9 and 13 years old (her birth date remains uncertain). Although they married early, they lived apart and did not consummate the marriage until Eleanor was probably in her late teens.  In the years that followed, their marriage of convenience grew into a union of love marked by fidelity.

Edward was one of the few kings of his time who did not take a mistress. He and Eleanor were inseparable. When Edward visited the Holy Land during the Eight Crusade, he brought Eleanor along, and she delivered a daughter (Joanna of Acre) in a tent. Altogether, the couple had 15 or 16 children, many who did not survive childhood.

Eleanor and Edward were crowned King and Queen of England in August 1274, following the death of Henry III. Eleanor would live just 15 more years. While traveling to join her husband in the city of Lincoln in late fall of 1290, she grew ill, probably with quartan fever. She had to halt her journey just 10 miles from her destination, where she died with Edward at her bedside.

Edward accompanied his wife’s body to its burial in Westminster Abbey. At each place that her remains rested along the way, he erected “Eleanor Crosses,” elaborate stone monuments in her memory. In all, 12 crosses stood at Lincoln, Grantham, Stamford, Geddingston, Northampton, Stony Stratford, Woburn, Dunstable, St Albans, Waltham, Westcheap and Charing. Today only three Eleanor Crosses survive. All have lost the tall crosses they bore, but the lower stages remain. The best of the three (and the only one still in its original location) is at Geddington.

Many years after Eleanor’s death, Edward spoke of her as she “whom living we dearly cherished, and whom dead we cannot cease to love.” Although he eventually remarried, he continued to honor Eleanor’s memory until his own death in 1307.

Tales of Faeraven

DawnSingerWayFarer

Readers in search of fresh epic fantasy will delight in discovering the wonders and winged horses of Elderland. Dragons abound in fantasy, however little has been written about winged horses. Tales of Faeraven fills that gap. Passages of poetic imagery, fast-paced action, realistic relationships and unexpected romance create an exciting reading experience. Tales of Faeraven contains threads and hues of traditional medieval fantasy but weaves its own unique tapestry.

Author Journal: Nipping Procrastination

Janalyn Voigt

I’ll admit it: I’ve procrastinated on drawing rough maps from which artist Anna O’Brien will create real maps of Elderland for inclusion in DawnSinger, which releases this fall. As I wrote DawnSinger, I found it easier to consult maps filed away in my imagination. Unfortunately, now that others want to see those maps, I have to put them down on paper.

In this case, I know my motives for procrastination, and they aren’t good. While I can draw animals just fine, maps defeat me. To make matters worse, Elderland has evolved into a complex world. In a word, the task intimidates me. And yes, I’m not unaware that it’s ludicrous to be intimidated by my own fantasy world.

The trouble is, whenever I put something like this off, it grows in proportion to the time that elapses. The longer I wait to climb a mountain, the steeper it seems. Fear of a thing is usually much bigger than the reality. Realizing this, I recently took the bull by the horns, met the road with the rubber, and fished rather than cut bait.  I finished a rough draft of the Elderland map and contacted Anna and my editor at Port Yonder Press about getting started.

Next week, I’ll finish the map and send it on its way to more capable hands. Meanwhile, that mountain has turned back into a mole hill.

Note to Self: Whatever it is that holds you back, just do it.

Author Journal: Of Maps and Heroes

Old World MapPaper littered the card table around my sketch of a portion of Elderland, the fantasy world of my Tales of Faeraven trilogy. I worried my bottom lip and murmurred to myself. “I’m in big trouble.”

It seems fantasy worlds are much easier to imagine than to chart. With the artist waiting for my preliminary sketches, the rubber had to meet the road.

It wasn’t that I was unfamiliar with Elderland. After years of carrying the story around in my head, not to mention the year spent writing the novel and the additional months of editing, I knew it like the back of my hand.

No, the problem stemmed from the amount of detail an epic adventure requires. The three books of my trilogy chew through a lot of terrain. Certain plot elements demand accurate propotions and even dictate the shape of the landscape.

I paused to respond to a Facebook comment from the artist who will render the finished maps. “Oh boy, do we have our work cut out for us. Why’d I have to create such a complex world?”

She responded with a Pollyanna-esque, “It’ll be great.”

This remark from someone who, also a writer, has been known to carry an entire universe in her head failed to reassure me. I’m not sure what I’ve done to warrant such an expression of faith. How could I fulfill her expectations?

Enter my husband, John, who gave me valuable advice on the geography of Elderland and even offered to draw a neater version of my map. John has a mathematical bent whereas I, well, I write poetry. I accepted his offer.

The last time I accepted an offer from this fellow, it turned out well. :o

First Paragraphs

A crosswind caught Kai’s wingabeast as lightning flared too near. Shrilling, the winged horse tilted in flight, and Kai’s stomach lurched. A gust snatched the hood from his head and roared in his ears. He blinked to clear the stinging rain that drove into his eyes. Thunder boomed like a timpani, shaking the air. Flecht shuddered beneath him, and Kai placed a calming hand on his wingabeast’s straining neck. He did not like this long flight through the wild night any better than did Flecht.

An image rose, unbidden—Lof Raelein Maeven, Faeraven’s High Queen, upon her deathbed, her sea-green eyes surging with life. As a guardian of Faeraven and as a friend, he would die to appease the hope that had flared in those eyes.

Wind howled and lightning flashed close enough to blind. Kai wondered if his own death neared. He would not—could not—halt his journey, although it took him into the teeth of danger. Necessity drove him as he pushed onward, past endurance. If he survived the storm, he would deliver Maeven’s last summons.
