The Promise Tree

Rate this book
A preacher’s daughter shouldn’t encourage a troublemaker—no matter what her wayward heart desires.

Liberty has always believed she should marry a man of God, but Jake doesn’t qualify. The promises they’d made at age twelve can’t change that. If only Jake would stop pursuing her, she might keep from falling in love with him.

Jake fears he’ll lose Liberty to Beau, the new man in town. He doesn’t trust the smooth-talker—and certainly not with Liberty. Expressing his opinion sounds jealous and pushes Liberty further away. Jake’s efforts to forget the woman he loves lands him in jail for a crime he didn’t commit.

A bounty hunter on the trail of a notorious outlaw gallops into town, and Liberty finds herself in unexpected peril. When Jake rides after her, he faces a test of faith. Jake and Liberty must each overcome their own false beliefs. Only then can they experience the truth of God’s redeeming love.

Set during a troubled time in America, the Montana Treasure series explores faith, courage, and love in the Wild West. Read this heartwarming story to affirm your faith in love.

Janalyn Voigt's literary education began in childhood when her father read chapters from classic children's books to her as bedtime stories. She grew older, and the bedtime stories stopped, but Janalyn continued to fall asleep to the stories she made up in her head at night. This, combined with her avid consumption of books, gave Janalyn an intuitive grasp of storytelling. Adventure, romance, history, suspense, and fantasy or whimsy appear in every story she writes. Readers who enjoy Janalyn's vivid descriptions, realistic dialogue, and unpredictable plots often follow her across genres. Janalyn Voigt is represented by Wordserve Literary Agency. I had never heard of Janalyn Voigt before but I am sure glad I took a chance and picked up THE PROMISE TREE. Ms. Voigt instantly hooked me and pulled me right in from the very first page and never let me go. Hang on tight! It is going to be a very crazy and bumpy ride!

THE PROMISE TREE shows how when we turn ourselves over to God anything is possible. It is the heartbreaking story of Liberty and the unbelievable situation she is put into following her breaking her friend, Jake’s, heart. I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy clean reads with true to life characters. Janalyn Voigt grabs her readers by the heart and never lets them go.

All the characters in THE PROMISE TREE are very relatable and not perfect at all. You can’t help but feel each emotion that they are dealing with. When one of them was happy, I was happy. When Liberty was crying, I was crying too. I love when an author does that to their readers. I truly was an emotional mess after reading this heart tugging story of a pastor’s daughter and the battles she faces. Now that I have read THE PROMISE TREE and discovered Janalyn Voigt, I’m excited to read more of this new to me, auto buy from now on author.

If you are looking for a heart tugging read that is filled with some heavy subject matter, but still fills you with hope, please take a chance and read THE PROMISE TREE. It is so emotional and memorable you need to keep the tissues close by because your emotions are going to be on one crazy roller coaster ride. Once you finish devouring this story, you are going to want to tell everyone you know about this awesome book.

My Review: This is the second book in the series, and it picks up right where #1 ends. The characters are a bit more settled in their town, but it is far from civilized. Liberty has grown up and is of marriable age, but sees no serious prospects in town. As the pastor’s daughter, she feels an obligation to marry an honorable man to take over the town church after her father retires.

Jake and Liberty grew up together and years ago promised to marry. Both felt it was a childish promise, but now that they are grown, both are revisiting the promise and wondering if it might be the right thing to do. Jake is all in, but Liberty is not. So, out of his deep love for her, Jake is wiling to let her go. When Beau rides into town and tries to swoop Liberty off her feet, Jake becomes jealous.

This is a good story with real life like characters who are dealing with real world problems. They seek God’s guidance in their decisions, and in the end, justice is served and true love is realized.

A story of redemption and love

My rating is 4.5 stars

Nobody thought Jake was good enough for Liberty - not even Jake himself. I felt very sorry for him as he ached, regretting his carefree and somewhat wild childhood as the consequences followed him into adulthood. Even his Ma had come to expect trouble from him. But he wasn't a reprobate. He was a kind man who loved his family and especially loved Liberty. The Promise Tree journals his spiritual journey as he came to realize that no one, not even Liberty or her godly Pa, was truly good, and that is the reason for the sacrifice Jesus made. The freedom that came from having his slate wiped clean changed his life.

Liberty wasn't necessarily proud or boastful and yet she didn't believe that Jake would be a good son-in-law to her Pa. His past would bring a stain that was just not acceptable. I love the way the author showed how this wasn't due to an elevated sense of worth on her part, but more due to her duty to her family to marry appropriately. The secret she learned flipped her life upside down and had her reevaluating her worth. And discovering where her true value comes from.

It has been a while since I have read any of the Montana Gold stories and yet I found that as I read The Promise Tree, particular scenes came vividly to mind. I pictured the cabin near the schoolhouse and realized I was remembering an image I had formed previously. I imagine this is due to the beautiful way these stories paint the surroundings and find a long-term home in my imagination.

The details were so clearly illustrated. Not only did the characters hear and see the birds, I knew what kind of birds they were and how they behaved. And was able to see the trees and plants and flowers clearly. And yet these things were carefully inserted into the story as a part of its fabric, adding to the enjoyment and not detracting from it.

As with the other stories I've read by this author, romance is only one aspect of it. Steeped in faith, the emphasis is on the way that only Jesus can change lives. And added to these was an adventure with unexpected peril. One of my favorite parts of the story was Liberty's way of staying sane through her fear and the uncertainty she found herself in - reciting Psalm 91.

If you enjoy Christian romance that goes deeper than simply surface issues with a hint of mystery and danger, you will want to read The Promise Tree. While you are at it, be sure to read the Montana Gold series - though it isn't entirely necessary for understanding the story , knowing the background of Liberty's family will enhance your reading.

A new to me author and a the 1st book in a New series, always intrigue me. The Promise Tree by Janalyn Voigt is Book 1 in the Montana Treasure Series. It is a Historical, Western Christian Romance book.

Liberty and Jake have been friends since childhood. Jake has always had a endured liking for Liberty. Liberty wants to marry a Man of God, but feels Jake doesn't portray the qualities of a Man of Faith. A new man, Beau, arrives in town and Jake feels Beau might steal the heart of Liberty and fears the "competition". He knows he has to try to forget how much he cares for and wants to be with Liberty. A turn of events land him in jail for something that he is innocent of. Liberty finds herself in a bit of a dilemma and Jake rides after her to help her out of the dilemma. The situation really tests Jake's faith. Will the situations at hand, bring Jake to be a Man of Faith? Will Jake win the heart of Liberty?

Janalyn Voigt has blown me away with her writing style. Historical Christian Fiction is one of my favorite genres and the setting of the West really made the setting of the book soo good. The characters have unique personalities. Liberty is very determined and set in her ways. Jake knows what he wants and is anxious to make things happen. He also has a sensitive side, which is rare in Men. I really like that the Christian Faith takes front and center for much of the book. I HIGHLY recommend this book for those who love Historical Christian Fiction. I am already excited about reading Book 2 in the series when it comes out!

The Promise Tree is written by Janalyn Voigt. This is book one in the Montana Treasure series. I have read a few other books by this author, and I have enjoyed them very much.

You will fall in love with these characters are soon as you start reading. Liberty, who is a preacher's daughter made a promise with childhood friend, Jake when they were 12 years old. However, she knows what is expected of her. She is to marry a strong man of God. Unfortunately Jake does not fit what she feels God intends for her. Jake has not made smart choices growing up. These choices have followed him into adult hood. The part that broke my heart was he did not even think he was good enough for Liberty.

Jake has doubts. He knows that he has made mistakes. He does not like the new man in town that is trying to charm Liberty. He gets a weird feeling from him. Jake steps up and tries to show that he would be a good husband to Liberty.

The author always writes so much into her stories. There is romance, a bit of mystery, and a Biblical message. She has written flawed characters. She has written a beautiful storyline. I received a copy of this book through the author, publisher and JustRead publicity tours. All thoughts are my own.

This is the first book that I have read by Janalyn Voigt. I enjoyed the well written tale so much that I look forward to going back and reading her previous stories!
It was interesting to follow the story of Jake and Liberty. I felt bad for Jake, as he grew up and found that his crazy antics as a child/young adult followed him into adulthood and left him feeling like he didn't deserve Liberty/ I have to admit, with all the little friends my children have, I have thought about not holding some of the crazy behaviors of youth against a child who may one day want to become by son or daughter in law. I really felt for Jake, with the feeling of not being worthy of Liberty, as well as Liberty's pressure to marry well. I love how the story came together and enjoyed the characters immensely!
I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.

A western romance that builds over the course of the book.

Slow to start this book relies a lot on backstory building, though it brings back so many wonderful characters from the previous book series, as well as introduces many fantastic characters for what are sure to be great additions to the series. I liked the friendship between Phoebe and Liberty. Phoebe is an excellent horsewoman, and I enjoyed following her as well.

Liberty was hard to like at first, as I felt that she came off as judgmental and was overthinking things in her head. Though I did come around on her as the story progressed. I really admired Jake though, how he thought the best of Liberty through it all, and worked hard to prove himself to her. There were many well done, compelling conversations throughout the book centering on faith.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read that grew on me as the stakes rose and the tensions built. Strong themes of faith, and memorable characters. Fantastic for fans of western romance.

Ms. Voigt certainly puts her characters in tough situations! How many of us hold ourselves or others to a standard that God has not called us to? Liberty sure did—but not from her parents, and especially not from her preacher father!
I wanted to like this story, and I tried, I really did. Dialogue will make or break a story for this reader, and sadly, in this story it fell flat for me. Mundane bits, and things I had a hard time believing people would say to one another.
Still, Ms. Voigt writes of family and friends who are close-knit—something that is dear to my heart. I especially appreciated (envied!) the bond between Liberty and Phoebe.

A preacher’s daughter shouldn’t encourage a troublemaker—no matter what her wayward heart desires.
The Promise Tree by Janalyn Voigt, is book one in the Montana Treasure Series. Liberty and Jake’s relationship is the focus of the story, Liberty believes that the man she will marry be a man of God, but Jake does not meet those standards. The promise they made cannot change that. A new man arrives in town and Jake is afraid that he will lose Liberty. Will Jake’s efforts to win the heart of Liberty land him in jail for a crime he did not commit?
I love how Janalyn’s paints a picture of troubling times in the Wild West, the Montana Treasures is about courage, faith and falling in love.

Liberty Hayes has self-imposed expectations of who she is supposed to be and who she is to marry. Having grown up as a preacher’s daughter, these beliefs cause her to reject suitor Jake Buckthorn, a young man who has loved her since they were children. Liberty must come to the realization that the past can be forgiven and people should be given a second chance. Liberty risks losing the man who makes her happy and treasures their love. I was glad to see that Liberty came to believe in Jake and see the wonderful and caring man he has become.

If you like tales of the Old West that are faith-filled and offer hope, The Promise Tree is one you will enjoy. It is the first book in the Montana Treasure series.

Thank you to the author for a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Promise Tree is a western historical romance novel by author Janalyn Voigt. The Promise Tree is book one of the Montana Treasure series set on the Montana Territory. (1884)

The Promise Tree is a well-written story that includes young love, an illegitimate child, Indians, a medicine show, and outlaws.

I highly recommend The Promise Tree to fans of good, clean western historical romance.

I enjoyed reading more about the characters I met in the author’s first series, Montana Gold. Although the relationship between Liberty and Jake is the primary focus, there’s enough story and unexpected plot turns to hold readers’ interest. It’s always fun to read Janalyn Voigt’s picturesque descriptions. Voigt does a good job setting the stage for future books in the series, leaving readers looking forward to the next book! I also appreciated the Author’s Note at the end of the story.

My thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of this book. I was not asked to leave a favorable review. My opinions are my own.

I enjoyed the word-pictures of the countryside around the small town of Liberty and the various other places the different characters went. Other than outlaws, a rattlesnake, a bucking, runaway horse, and a mountain lion, the land seemed so very peaceful, with many restful places to stop and enjoy the beauty. If I were a young adult and just starting out in life, I think living in an area of the country like this would be great. But I have lived long enough to know there is no perfect place to live. Miss Liberty Hayes, the interesting heroine of this story, knew a lot about the dangers around her. If you read the previous series by this author, you met Liberty as a girl. Now she is a twenty-year-old who is trying with great difficulty to be the kind of young lady who will bring no reproach on her father, the local pastor. She brings a lot of pressure on herself because she is trying to figure it out on her own rather than trusting God to lead her. She is a believer but, like most of us when we were young, she still has some wrong ideas about what God expects, as well as what her parents expect. Interestingly, some of her eye-opening moments came from unlikely sources, such as Deputy Sheriff Manchen. I believe you will enjoy this tale from the late 1800s, particularly if you like stories about the Old West. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
