Montana Gold #3

Stagecoach to Liberty

Rate this book
Elsa Meier, a talented young Hessian girl who plays the hurdy-gurdy and dances, signs a contract to entertain miners in the Wild West. Elsa travels to America in the company of Miles and Alicia Peabody, the brother and sister who persuaded her mother to allow her to go. Elsa hopes for freedom and the chance to send money home to help her family. Instead she comes to the attention of a wealthy and unscrupulous man. On a stagecoach traveling into Montana Territory, Elsa conveys her peril to a handsome stranger with an Irish accent. Con Walsh, on a quest to find the truth about himself, stumbles into a dangerous situation involving a frightened young woman in need of rescue. Despite his own pressing troubles, he finds that her own safety matters to him more than his own. Set in Montana during its gold rush -- a time troubled by outlaws, corruption and vigilante violence, Stagecoach to Liberty explores faith, love, and courage in the wild west. This story can stand alone or continue the saga that began with Hills of Nevermore and Cheyenne Sunrise.

Janalyn Voigt

Janalyn Voigt's literary education began in childhood when her father read chapters from classic children's books to her as bedtime stories. She grew older, and the bedtime stories stopped, but Janalyn continued to fall asleep to the stories she made up in her head at night. This, combined with her avid consumption of books, gave Janalyn an intuitive grasp of storytelling. Adventure, romance, history, suspense, and fantasy or whimsy appear in every story she writes. Readers who enjoy Janalyn's vivid descriptions, realistic dialogue, and unpredictable plots often follow her across genres. Janalyn Voigt is represented by Wordserve Literary Agency. Once again, Janalyn Voigt writes a story full of action and intrigue. With human trafficking, stagecoach robberies, lynchings, dangers from the Indians, kidnapping and more, Stagecoach to Liberty brings the Montana Gold Rush to life.

The characters were appealing. I could understand the motivation that drove Elsa to indenture herself to virtual strangers to travel to another country without her family. It was great to watch her transform from meekness to having courage to stand up for herself.

Though the book stands alone, it is best read after the others in the series to give a more complete understanding of some of the characters and their circumstances.

I read this book in about 2 days. The first thing I have to say is be sure you have read the first two books first or you will have no idea what is going on. The author picks up the story and doesn't slow down. Which you should read those books anyway because they're great.

Again, Janalyn Voigt takes us on a journey through a snippet of a the past and I came away with a smile and feeling like I learned something. She gathers up the characters from the previous books and introduces a couple new ones, specifically a young German woman Elsa. Elsa came to America to better herself and send back money to her family and the contract that she signed isn't what she thinks it is. She finds herself in a situation she needs to get out of asap and along the way encounters Con Walsh.

Con is just trying to get home, but he can't sit by when a young woman is in trouble. And once he has decided he is going to do something, nothing is going to stop him. I will never tire of stories that are "yep, you're one of us now" and that is what this is.

I feel like this overarching story is building to the end and the stage was set in Stagecoach to Liberty and I look forward to seeing how Janalyn Voigt ends this series.

A very memorable novel

I enjoyed reading this book. I had a had time putting it down. Janalyn has written a novel of romance and intrigue with a good mystery included. I was on the edge of my seat finishing it.
A good clean western romance that I think would make a great movie some day,

Having read the previous two books in the Montana Gold Series by Janalyn Voight, I was happy to pick up another and see what's next in the lives of the Walshes - Con, Bry and Rob; their cousin Shane and his wife, America; and their friend Maisie and her young daughter, Phoebe.

This saga brought even more action, drama, mystery, and romance than the first two (a difficult feat), though comparatively it started off a bit slow for me. I wondered why, then I realized it was because of the same smarmy couple, Miles and Alicia Peabody, herding *another* group of unsuspecting females to the West (Book 2, Cheyenne Sunrise, introduces us to their wily and avaricious ways). The deja vu moment passed quickly though, as Elsa, the Hessian hurdy gurdy girl featured in this tale, just as quickly became a compelling focus, sympathetic figure, and, ultimately, heroine.

Con Walsh - who freakishly lost his memory while away from his family - meets up with Elsa on his journey back to discovering who he is and where he came from. He sympathetically hones in on Elsa's plight and makes it his business to assist her in attaining her freedom. Along the way, compassion sparks a protective stance, which shifts to interest, which ignites to love.

Janalyn's scenes transition swiftly, serving either to move the action and story along or to explicate it. There are quite a few story lines to follow, but if you're paying attention, you'll begin to see how they relate before the denouement. And if you're like me, you will anticipate them and surmise their outcome (most of the time, successfully!). :D

Though romance figures robustly in Stagecoach to Liberty, these are the things I have come to count on and love in Janalyn's stories: rich, descriptive detail (physical, geographical, historical, meteorological even!); sympathetic characters; credible story arcs; lucid and natural dialogue; crisp similes and metaphors; and, most importantly, edifying accounts of faith found, renewed, and strengthened.

My one regret is that the widow Maisie's heart is left to flounder. But the sneak peak at Book 4 gives me hope! :)

The Montana Gold series continues with another exciting story of life on the frontier as readers are introduced to Elsa. Most of the main characters we have come to love from the earlier books are back and play a role in this new story. I appreciate that the author keeps the story clean but the message is clear about the desires and intentions of the people who are escorting Elsa to Montana. At times, I simply shook my head at the depravity and cruelty of certain characters who thought nothing at all of going to any measures to get what they wanted and apparently thought they deserved. Janalyn Voigt has taken certain historical locations and events and woven an interesting story about the plight of a young woman who was convinced to come to America to earn money to send back to her family in Germany, a very common occurrence during that era. In many cases, these young women became pawns in the hands of greedy, unscrupulous individuals. Compounding the problem was the fact that those who would try to protect the young women could easily end up brutally beaten or even dead. Would Elsa survive with her virtue intact? What would happen to the evil couple who had tricked her and so many others under false pretenses to come to America and travel out West to be auctioned to the highest bidder? Would other innocent people suffer for trying to do the right thing? Once again faith played a vital role in the lives of the people in Liberty and Bitterroot Valley as they struggled to have a decent life. I enjoyed the action, the romance, and the struggle of good versus evil. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

Ms. Voigt’s descriptive prose transports readers to the time period and Montana setting. We experience the lure of prairie and valley and mountains and small western towns. All this was like a breath of fresh air as I enjoyed reading this historical romance. The dialogue is well-written overall. Con’s scenes are a delight to read, with realistic dialogue and his personal reflections. I was especially pleased that it wasn’t necessary to read the books in this series in order, as I read the first but wasn’t able to read the second. Ms. Voigt unobtrusively provides readers with just the right amount of information to enjoy the story. I’m curious to see what this author offers her readers next!

Even in the midst of turmoil and disaster God is in control!

This was another incredible book proving God's power and plan for each of his children, despite Satan's attempts at stopping him! It seems like every key character (good guys), in this story had to fight their fears, step out in faith, forgive the unforgivable, follow their heart, and love despite the consequences! Definitely an emotional roller coaster for this reader! I highly recommend this book to Christians who want to be encourage and entertained, as well as those wanting to know what makes a believer respond differently in horrible situations! This book has it all in spades!!

Voigt continues her Montana Gold series with Con Walsh’s story, picking up a thread from the previous book and giving this layered hero his time to shine. Several storylines - which at first seem only tangentially related - converge on this Gold Rush setting, adding dimension to both the characters and the plot and keeping reader interest engaged from beginning to end. For her own part, Elsa Meier may be the most compelling heroine introduced so far in this series (which is saying a lot considering how engaging the previous two have been) - with grace and grit in abundance. Fabulous romantic chemistry, heart-in-your-throat adventure, and the promise of more to come make this a must-read for historical/western romance fans!
