Janalyn Voigt's literary education began in childhood when her father read chapters from classic children's books to her as bedtime stories. She grew older, and the bedtime stories stopped, but Janalyn continued to fall asleep to the stories she made up in her head at night. This, combined with her avid consumption of books, gave Janalyn an intuitive grasp of storytelling. Adventure, romance, history, suspense, and fantasy or whimsy appear in every story she writes. Readers who enjoy Janalyn's vivid descriptions, realistic dialogue, and unpredictable plots often follow her across genres. Janalyn Voigt is represented by Wordserve Literary Agency. This was my favorite book of the series so far. I found it easier to read and not as confusing as the previous books. This may be because there is less movement to different locations. This book seemed to be more about character development and the stress of creating a family.

Mara was thought to be dead by her father, High King Elcon. He mourned the loss of his wife and daughter for years until she was found and brought back to him. At this point, she had been raised by a mother and father and forged relationships. It was a struggle to make a relationship with a man who was her father and a stranger at the same time.

While this story was progressing another family story was developing. This one was Rand's family. His father is Freaer, the usurper who wants to take the throne from Elcon. Rand is illegitimate, making his story a tough one to read. He is basically a good guy who is in a bad situation.

I loved the interaction of the characters and the weaving in of the past, present, and future that is to come. This is story of finding love, hope, friendship, and honor in a time of war.

I am looking forward to the next installment!

The third book in the Tales of Faeraven is just as surprising as the first two. Just when you think things are okay the story pulls you left and right. Janalyn Voigt has such a way of crafting a fantasy world while weaving scripture into the story and making it relatable as always. I wished there was mention of a time skip for this book. Unlike book two, this book takes place a few years after the events of book two. This also was a bit more confusing as point of views switched up more frequently.

This book is centered around Mara and the secret of her life. Mara was an interesting character. She was bold and sassy. She reminded me of her father and aunt combined. I loved how she went head first into things without really thinking things through. She handled everything pretty well. I can't wait to see her do more as the heir of Faeraven.

Elcon is still a comical character! I enjoyed his interaction with each character. He definitely is fit for High King. He took care of his people and his family the best he knew how.

Emmerich is still the wise man! I LOVE him! I have since book one. I just love the guidance and wisdom he provides to each character. I appreciate that he disappeared for a while to allow the people to come to their senses. I'm curious as to his true plans however.

Kai is still the strong, protective and caring man that he was from book one. I'm glad I got some answers concerning his disappearance in book two. The things going on with Shae are a bit frightening. I hope that gets solved.

Arillia was a bit annoying to me with her insecurities. She allowed Aewen get to her and ruin the better part of her marriage. I feel like she needed to grow up and move forward instead of being stuck in the past.

Rand was an interesting addition to this series. I enjoyed him and how different he was from his father. He definitely was kind hearted. I loved seeing him stand up against his father.

Freaer, as usual, is twisted and annoying. I seriously cannot stand him and hope he goes by the end of book four.

Overall, great addition to the series! Excited for DawnKing which is book four.

Book three in Janalyn Voigt’s Tales of Faeraven takes place eighteen years after the previous book ends. Elcon and the others at Torindan have grown complacent during their time of peace, so they are unprepared when their enemy rebuilds his forces.

Readers meet a couple new characters. Mara and Rand are young and trying to find where they belong and make the right decisions for their lives. Many of the previous characters return as well. And some questions that were left at the end of Wayfarer are answered but more are presented.

Sojourner ends with a little more of a cliffhanger than the first two books, but my guess is Voigt is gearing readers up for something epic in the next installment. As this series continues, I become more invested in these characters and Voigt’s story world. And I really want Kai and Shae to get their HEA!

Sojourner
Tales of Faeraven
By: Janalyn Voigt

*REVIEW* 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Sojourner is the third book in the Faeraven Series, and it begins approximately sixteen years after the end of Wayfarer. That's a big time jump for a continuous story, and I wondered what changes would be in store. A couple of new characters are introduced, and I liked the fact that they interjected a bit of new life into the story. Obviously, some world building aspects were slightly different because things do change over time; however, the unique and descriptive settings that have been present throughout the series were still just as vivid and detailed. The plot felt a little slower than the previous books, but this remains a well written, inventive, entertaining and complex read with dynamic unforgettable characters and an underlying current of faith. I'm interested to see where things are going next. Janalyn Voigt has written a great addition to the series and I recommend for anyone who has enjoyed the books!

I eagerly anticipated reading SoJourner having recently enjoyed DawnSinger and WayFarer. Janalyn Voigt did not disappoint. The plot of SoJourner picks up a few years after WayFarer left off. There are a couple of surprises near the beginning of the book - one of which I had hoped for while reading WayFarer. Good vs. evil is a continued theme. Several of the characters in SoJourner will be familiar to those who have read the previous books. Voigt continues the fantasy world she previously created. I saw no discrepancies between the previous titles and this one.
Readers will agonize with Rand as his inner self wars between doing what he knows to be right and doing what needs to be done to gain his father’s acceptance. Which will he choose? Readers will also empathize with Mara as she learns her entire life has been a lie of sorts. Will she be able to make her way in a world unfamiliar to her?
I look forward to reading book 4 in the Tales of Faeraven series. I highly recommend reading these books in order in order to fully understand the plot.
Area of Potential Concern
SoJourner seems to have more violence and graphic descriptions than I remember in the first two books in the Tales of Faeraven series. I would not recommend this book for younger than high schoolers.

I would place SoJourner in my K-12 Christian school library but with the notation that it is for high school only.

I want to thanks Prism Book Tours for the complimentary e-copy of SoJourner. This is my honest review.

This is the third novel in the Fairaven series and this story takes us further into this fantasy world, with an air of anticipation for the next in the series.

This story takes place 18 years later with two characters that are searching for belonging and acceptance. I would definitely classify this as a coming of age story.

Mara is a simple commoner, or so she thinks, until she finds out some startling truths about her past. Searching for her place in this world with this new truth sends her on a path of her new destiny.

Rand is a character that is running away from the demons of his past that are still intent on destroying him and all he holds dear. These two start off on an adventure that will bring them to truths that they did not know of.

I was happy to be back in this world. I enjoyed the continuation of this story and I think this one just might be my favorite as many loose ends of the previous story are tied up. The story arc is one that is keeping me glued to the pages and looking forward to the next in the series.

I was provided with a copy of the book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

SoJourner picks up where Wayfarer left off, sixteen years later. Faeraven has been peaceful, but the peace is broken with encroaching war brought once again by Frear.

SoJourner starts with a new character, Mara, whom I think might just be one of my favorites so far. Her spunk and courage are endearing, as well as her deep, forgiving nature. Also new to the scene is Rand, the son of an enemy. His character really adds depth and a new dimension to the story.

The plot starts out slow, then picks up its pace near the end, ending with an explosive turn of events that will leave you wanting to read the next book. The whole world is different, as it is many years later, and yet, the same, with exploration of familiar places and people.

Voigt once again delivers a novel of beautiful descriptions and a unique world all her own. While I felt the novel could have been fleshed out just a little more, the overall pace and plot were done excellently.

Sojourner is the third book in the Faeraven series, and is my third read from Janalyn Voigt. These novels seem like they could be read as standalones, but the books are so good, I recommend checking them all out. This book takes place about sixteen years after the previous book.

Janalyn Voigt knows how to world build. The unique settings were described beautifully. This is a skill I’ve seen improve with each book. With each book Janalyn Voigt was able to draw me deeper into the story. I’m a huge fan of world building done right, and this is a prime example.

The pacing was a bit slow in comparrison to the first two books, which made it a little difficult to get into at first. But, the story is beautifully crafted with dynamic characters and an underlying theme of Faith.

Overall, Sojourner is a fantastic read with beautiful descriptions and compelling characters. Recommended for sure!

Sojourner is an interesting addition to The Tales of Faeraven. It occurs many years after the previous installment and from the start introduces several new characters. Thus, it helps to read the previous books first, but my hunch is you will enjoy it even if you don't.

I thoroughly enjoyed the introduction and development of Mara's character, and I'd be glad to tell you but I don't want to give any spoilers!

WARNING - This is the third of a four-part series. The first two parts had nice stopping points. Not this one - you'll want to read part four as well.

I received a free copy of this book for my unbiased review.
